Microchipping

Did you know that virtually any animal can be microchipped now? Dogs, cats and horses are the most commonly microchipped animals but they are also available for birds and fish!!

Microchipping is now a legal requirement for all dogs born after July 2006 except working dogs. The microchip itself is the size of a grain of rice and is inserted under the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades. The chip contains a unique number which is then linked to you and your pet’s details on a database. If your pet goes missing and is subsequently found they are then scanned for their microchip number. The vet clinic, SPCA or other authority involved in scanning a missing animal can then search on NZCAR (New Zealand Companion Animal Register) to find the owner of the animal. We have been involved in many successful reunions thanks to microchipping and often owners haven’t realized their pet is missing until we give them a call!

Microchipping dramatically increases the likelihood of getting your pet back should they go missing or get stolen. We recommend microchipping for all dogs and cats - there have been some amazing stories of pet/owner reunions all thanks to a tiny chip!
